Not for anyone who seriously considers to get into drones
By Amazon Customer
I read quite a few "For dummies" books and unfortunately this has been one of the most disappointing ones.
I expected that after reading the book I would have a basic understanding on how a drone works, an insight on its components, dynamics and the general knowledge on how to operate a drone at a basic level or maybe even how to proceed in case I would like to build my own.
Unfortunately I found none of the above.
What was most irritating is how little there is actually on drones. Most of the book is about how to shop or behave on the internet, basic and watered down introductions on related consumer electronics (cameras, editing software etc..) and somewhat product specific reviews that (naturally) are already outdated. All this might be useful advice to anyone who is a dummy about most of contemporary consumer electronics, yet it should not become the main point of a volume that is supposed to speak about drones.
Each section starts with way too long introductions, which seam to have the only function to add text.
Once all such "bloatware" we are left with about 30% of drone specific text, which is mainly an edited extract from various user manuals, as the book only speaks about ready-to-fly platforms, basically becoming a purchasing guide for products that are already outdated.
The same obsolescence issue affects the legal section: it should be updated ASAP, as with recent regulation changes readers might get into trouble.
The book often tells you about what you should pay attention to, without actually telling you how you are supposed to do it.
Is it all bad? Off course it isn't! Among all the bloatware, incorrect phrases ("such as high rate of speed" to indicate speed) and repetitions there is plenty of good advice for starters, especially in the safety section. Nevertheless when purchasing a book I expect to receive more structured information than what I can receive by a 10 min. google search. Personally I found more and better structured information on http://myfirstdrone.com/ than in this volume.

Get this drone book used. Don't pay full price.
By Nukedude
This is the first Dummies book that I actually felt like I should return and get my money back. However, my habit of highlighting and marking up books rendered this used the only time I read it.
Too much time is spent on the two ready to fly models presented, and social media sites to learn more. This is noticeable thinner than most Dummies books too. Since this was introduced before the FCC changes made recently at the end of 2015, I will not judge it on that account. But this really needs another hundred pages on: the history of drones, common uses, how to build and maintain them, and common statistics. Even some funny anecdotes may have made this book better.
Like all dummies books it has the beginning pages of:"How This Book is Organised", and "Icons Used in This Book". Beyond that, it has very little than can't be gleaned from forums or from actually buying and using a small cheap "drone".
The first chapter, "Drones 101" was good. It began with history and went through to remote control airplanes and consumer and military craft.
The DJI Phantom 2 Vision and the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 are the two models covered in this book. Then the book goes into picking cameras. Next comes chapter 4, "Finding Support and Resources". This chapter is what is usually at the end of Dummies books as an appendix.
For the very basics, with a huge slant toward the two quadcopters noted above, this could be a starting point, but the price should be lowered, to reflect the lack of information and pages this book seems to be missing. I ended up purchasing two other books and magazines that had a lot more information in them. If you tend to start with the Dummies book for a subject first, and then jump in deep, buy this used.

Perfect for the dummy in me... thorough and fascinating...
By AmazonFan
Drones for Dummies is an excellent introduction to drones. Written in an easy to understand style, it covers everything you need to know about drones. As Mark LaFay says in his introduction, he assumes nothing other than that the reader knows how to use a computer and the Internet.
From the basics of understanding how a drone works to buying, flying and various uses for drones, LaFay has authored a thorough book for anyone at all interested in drones. I'm not exactly a dummy but I'm no aviation expert either so this book was perfect for me.
I found it extremely informative, especially the section on understanding the laws that govern the use of drones.
And anyone who has ever taken a selfie will like the section on using drones for aerial photography.
While there is a wealth of information here, LaFay is also a witty writer, making this an entertaining as well as educational read.
Even if you have no intention of actually buying a drone (I'm still several months away from buying my own), Drones for Dummies is a fascinating look at one of the fastest growing segments of consumer technology today.
Definitely recommended .. would make a great gift as well.
