About the Author

Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) is a prolific American author best known for his works centered on the lawyer-detective Perry Mason. At the time of his death in March of 1970, in Ventura, California, Gardner was "the most widely read of all American writers" and "the most widely translated author in the world," according to social historian Russell Nye. The first Perry Mason novel, The Case of The Velvet Claws, published in 1933, had sold twenty-eight million copies in its first fifteen years. There have been six motion pictures based on his work and the hugely popular Perry Mason television series starring Raymond Burr, which aired for nine years and 271 episodes.

THE best Perry Mason mystery

So, you've heard about Perry Mason and would like to read one of his books? If you were to read one and only one of the dozens of books Erle Stanley Gardner wrote, "The Case of the Substitute Face" should be it. This book, written in 1938, shows Gardner at the top of his form, after he had fully developed his formula, but before it truly became a formula.
Gardner himself was a top lawyer. "The Case of the Chinese Shopkeepers" could have been one of Gardner's books if he hadn't done it himself. When Gardner heard the DA was going to subpoena one of his clients, a chinese shopkeeper in Oxnard CA, Gardner put another chinese man, who didn't speak English, in his client's store. The court officer then brought the wrong witness to court and, after much confusion, the case was dismissed.

Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) wrote more than one hundred novels over the course of his long career. A trial lawyer himself, Gardner's best known creation was Perry Mason, a flamboyant criminal defense attorney who earns his large fees by virtue of a remarkable talent for using the law to uncover the truth on the witness stand.

Although Gardner's Perry Mason novels were formula, Gardner was at the peak of his powers during the 1950s--and at his best he was able to combine a twisty plot, impressive courtroom scenes, and his tendency to staccato dialogue to tremendous effect. Written in 1958, THE CASE OF THE FOOT-LOOSE DOLL offers Gardner at his best.

An attractive secretary in Oceanside, California, Mildred Crest is looking forward to her marriage to the town's most eligible bachelor--but is stunned when he abandons her under highly dubious circumstances. Dazed and distraught, she gets in her car and simply goes as far and as fast as she can... until an unforeseen accident offers her the opportunity to escape the past once and for all.

Or so it seems. But the past has a way of catching up with you--and in Mildred's case it isn't just her own past that she has to worry about. Before too long the question of murder arises, and Mildred finds herself in desperate need of legendary Los Angeles attorney Perry Mason.

Law, police procedure, and science has changed quite a bit since Gardner wrote this book, but that is part of the fun. And in this instance Gardner anticipates the modern phenomena of identity theft in a most unexpected way. Fans will enjoy it and newcomers will find it a delight. Recommended.

Timeless book

Although written in 1938, this book comes across as fresh and exciting as anything written today. Perry Mason, although watered down in the Raymond Burr television version,is a robust man that will go to extreme measures to prove the innocense of his client. He often does this by showing the dishonesty and coercive tactics of the police, a fact still prevalent today.Gardner knew the law well and this book, as every book of his I've had the pleasure to read, has two or three wonderful episodes in which Mason uses his legal genius to further his cause. As a reader I had no idea of who actually committed the crime until the next to last page. Gardner intertwines all the facts masterfully and lets Perry Mason use his command for logic to show us the answers. Great book, and extremely entertaining. Don't let the age of Gardners books dissaude you from reading them. Like fine wine and law books; they get better with age

his book tells more about the Amish way of life, their so-called dating, what is expected of women, of men and of children, and thoroughly goes into the many reasons this young girl decided she had to get away from the Amish life in order to grow spiritually and go to college. She had no idea what to expect when she left her parents' home and had to be told by other Amish who had escaped, how to live in a world of freedom where she could decide for herself how she wanted to live. She had to be told to shave her legs and underarms, to use deodorant, and that there were guidelines about how to dress even in the "English" world. The reader feels her excitement when she finally gets a truck and learns how to drive it. She also learns that all English are not to be trusted when she is raped and didn't even know what had happened to her. The Amish don't tell their girls anything about sex or life in general, they learn it when they need to know it. Young Amish women are pitifully unprepared for life. I liked this book because the author wasn't afraid to tell the truth. - Jane A.C. Anyone wanting the truth about the strictest of Amish orders needs to read this book. I stayed awake reading till 12:30. Expect to not put the book down once you start. Emma is a very brave girl as well as determined . - Sarah Ayers Heartbreaking, the grief of a human's life without freedom to grow both physically and spiritually. Liked the description of Amish community and it has been the greatest amount of information given. I admire Emma and her courage, her dissatisfaction with their church, determination to be happy and most of all, be able to have peace free from others judgment. About the Author
Emma Gingerich left her Amish community in Eagleville, Missouri, at the age of eighteen. She went to south Texas, close to South Padre Island, where she lived for almost four years. She received her Associates Degree at a community college and transferred to Tarleton State University located in Stephenville, Texas, to complete her Bachelor’s Degree. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in business administration. Though Emma works full-time as a Billing Coordinator in the healthcare industry and is continuing her college education, she still managed to write her first memoir. She is looking forward to writing a sequel. Education is important to Emma, and she is happy to have the opportunity to attend college. She hopes to help and inspire other Ex-Amish people to receive an education as well. Her passions are: writing, hiking, traveling, running and helping others.

I'm posting the rating on the book as a former Swartzentruber Amish perspective: The book is a must read to learn the true traditional Swartzentruber Amish family daily lives. The moment I started reading the book, I was hooked. It explains the hardships of what a young girl goes through if she chooses to leave the Amish. It is a very well written book with no bad or demeaning language, so you can even let your teenagers read it. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to know or learn more about the Amish life and the struggles of starting a new life in the English world.

Incredible Determination!

I read it in one sitting, and was amazed by the courage of this slip of an 18 yr old girl with only an 8th grade education! Speaking primarily German, she ran away from the harshly restrictive and puzzling Amish world in hopes of a better life. With very little help, and knowing next to nothing about the "English", she continued to follow her dreams while being shamed and criticized by the only friends and family she had ever known.

Without a birth certificate, drivers license or any proof of identity, she had many roadblocks along the way. To make matters worse, she was a repeated crime victim. But, refusing to be thwarted, she worked to support herself, studied for her GED, then went on to college, where she is now working toward her graduate degree! I have read several books by Amish authors, but this one rings more true to life than any other I've read. I wish this very strong, intelligent, young author the very best life has to offer. BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it!

This is the one to read

This book tells more about the Amish way of life, their so-called dating, what is expected of women, of men and of children, and thoroughly goes into the many reasons this young girl decided she had to get away from the Amish life in order to grow spiritually and go to college. She had no idea what to expect when she left her parents' home and had to be told by other Amish who had escaped, how to live in a world of freedom where she could decide for herself how she wanted to live. She had to be told to shave her legs and underarms, to use deodorant, and that there were guidelines about how to dress even in the "English" world. The reader feels her excitement when she finally gets a truck and learns how to drive it. She also learns that all English are not to be trusted when she is raped and didn't even know what had happened to her. The Amish don't tell their girls anything about sex or life in general, they learn it when they need to know it. Young Amish women are pitifully unprepared for life. I liked this book because the author wasn't afraid to tell the truth.

About the Author
Brian Mulligan, FNZSP, Dip MT, originated and developed the concept of combining accesory mobilizations with physiological movements in the extremities (MWMs). In the spine, he promotes the use of natural apophyseal glides (NAGs) and sustained natural apophyseal glides (SNAGs). Brian Mulligan received a prestigous "International Service to the Profession Award" from the WCPT and has been an international lecturer in manual therapy since 1972.

Great content, but book falls apart.

This book contains very clear, and useful mulligan techniques. For those like myself who are in smaller communities where courses are inaccessible due to cost/time for travel it is a great resource.

My only issue with the book is the poor quality of the binding. Within minutes the cover came apart from the pages, and that was after only gingerly handling it.

Despite this I would recommend this book to any therapist as the content is what really matters.

Mulligan handbook

I have taken a class taught by Brain Mulligan many years ago. I have since misplaced my handbook and ordered the newer edition. It is a great reference tool for performing Mulligan tecniques. I felt lost without it!

Excellent book

It is a very useful and interesting material. Lean Manufacturing and Logistics is a topic very popular but still literature is missing in this field. Out there in the book there are plenty of examples and theoretical concepts for Leans. Really new and actual content inside. It is just for the business I work in and consider it worth a purchase.

The benchmark for great design books.

As a fan of Persona, more specifically P4, I knew I had to buy this as soon as I discovered its existence. The first thing I noticed was its weight. While it is a paperback, it is printed on some fairly thick card stock. Its 192 pages and almost none of them are wasted. Every named character is represented in the book (sorry rumor loving student and funky) along with a brief description from the artist. The main characters are all given a few pages, with design notes, character backgrounds, and different clothing. My favorite part in my quick skimming through the book is the change the characters go through throughout the games development. I certainly won't spoil any of them for you, but it is pretty interesting. There is an interview with the artist (Shigenori Soejima), along with Persona flyers and advertisements. Ever wonder what Chie's pins have on them? Or what color socks Morooka wears? Its in here!

I guess you'll already know if you like the content inside the book itself. Hopefully I don't have to tell you that if you like the art of the Persona games, you'll like the art in this book. I'm a huge fan of P4, and they've really knocked it out of the park on this. Its a great reference piece for fans of the game, and for 20$, you will not be disappointed.

Nice Jap-style video game art

[[VIDEOID:mo1R2PMC675YAZI]]The art book for the highly rated Playstation 2 game Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, known in Japan as ペルソナ4 (PERSONA 4).

It collects mainly the character art. They are art from various states of expression and costumes, which I think are art direct from the game. There are also some sketches for each. The style is anime-like and the characters suffer a bit of the same-face syndrome - they look rather similar if not for their costumes. Some guys are dressed as girls - pretty strange. The costumes aren't really unpredictable as they are street wear.

There are also designs for the summoned Persona and Shadow (enemy). Those are definitely unique and is to the standard of weirdness you would expect from Japanese design.

Towards the back are more miscellaneous sketches for the side cast. The environment (3D) art are actually just screenshots from the game. The game involves weather changes so there are several pictures of each place in different weather conditions. Most of the places are school compounds and so the visuals look pretty normal, again nothing unpredictable. They are printed rather small.

This book should appeal more to fans of the game and Shigenori Soejima art.

I was a bit afraid when I got this of having a large amount of repeat art to the art book I got with my Persona 4 pre-order at Gamestop years ago. My fear was misplaced.

While there is some duplication this beautiful put together book has more then I could hope for. It has art from all major areas of the game, as well as interviews with the designers, ads, and more. If you are a fan of Persona 4, this book is for you and you will not be disappointed.
