A comprehensively rational and scientific critical analysis of modern methods of singing instruction.

This work is a critical analysis which exposes the shortcomings and failures of modern methods of singing instructions.Having done so,it then proceeds to elaborate on the superceded method,namely bel canto or the so called old italian method.The author establishes the validity of the latter method by reference to the results it obtained.He convincingly argues that the decline in the quality of singers can be arrested only by a return to the bel canto method.In summary,I found this book to be very engrossing;a definite five star effort.

Long and technical but worthwhile reading for a serious singer

Probably the single most useful book on singing ever written because it repeats over and over the simple mantra, listen, listen, listen. Listen to great singers, listen to yourself as you sing, and listen to recordings of yourself and learn what you can do better. But most of all listen to the great singers and learn HOW they sing, not how they sound!

Don't waste any money on this book! Despite the fact that there might be some valuable information, there are so many typos that it is impossible to determine!! I cannot believe they would publish a book with so many typos on every single page!!! I can't even find a title or heading without a single typo in it. I've become so frustrated trying to read it (and TRANSLATE it into correct English), that I've given up. Obviously, this is not a book from a reputable source...

About the Author

Elizabeth E. Guzmán is the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program at the University of Iowa. Previously, she served as Language Coordinator at St. John’s University/College of St. Benedict, Director of the Spanish Program at Yale University, and Coordinator and Co-Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Language Program at The University of Michigan. In her native Chile, she supervised instructors of English as a Foreign Language. Ms. Guzmán received her B.A in English from Universidad de Santiago (Chile) and her M.A. in English as a Second Language from West Virginia University, and then pursued doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades and several earlier editions of Mosaicos.

 

Paloma Lapuerta holds the title ofProfessor of Spanish at Central Connecticut State University, where she teaches courses in Spanish language, culture, and literature. She has over twenty years of teaching experience at higher institutions around the world, including Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, and the United States, where she has taught at the University of Michigan, Dartmouth College, and the Middlebury College Spanish School. She completed her Licenciatura in Spanish Philology at the University of Salamanca, and she holds a Ph.D. in Spanish literature from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She has published numerous articles and a book on Spanish culture and literature. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

 

Judith E. Liskin-Gasparro is a professor of Spanish at the University of Iowa, where she teaches courses in second language acquisition, pedagogy, and Spanish language. She is the co-director of FLARE (Foreign Language Acquisition Research and Education), which offers an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition, and she was formerly the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program. Previously, she taught at Middlebury College and worked as a test development consultant at Educational Testing Service. She received her A.B. in Spanish from Bryn Mawr College, her M.A. from Princeton University and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in Foreign Language Education. She has published articles and books on language learning and teaching and has led many workshops for language teachers.She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

The relationshipthat the author has with Pearson language labs should be scrutinized very carefully. I
I have been. consistently frustrated by the manner inwhich they approach helping students to learn. Hours are consistently spent working out answers to the exercises. To add to the dilemma is the fact that their resource personnel, in some cases, do not speak Spanish and/or do not have the know how to help students reason out why they have received partially correct responses. This is an abbreviate summation of my problems with the program. If you wish to speak to me further on this product feel free to call me at 201 997 5165.

Everything came great. No problems at all. However, I had returned the rentals back to the address on July 29. It should have arrived on the first of August. I kept getting emails saying I still have to ship my textbook before the deadline. I wanted to check in with that.

Not the best Spanish book

This Spanish book could have been written better. I used this book for Spanish One and my professor was constantly putting it down and pointing out errors in the book. It did help me to learn some basic Spanish, but it definitely wasn't the best.

Unless you work in an ER or Peds ER (physician, PA, NP, or RN), there would be little reason to buy this book.
But for those who do work in the ER, this book is the holy bible of Peds ER and has been for many years. This latest version is updated with some new chapters but overall has the same content that is needed to know how to deal with children in emergent settings

About the Author

Dr. Ian Barnes is Head of the Department of History and International Studies at the University of Derby, England.  He studied at the Universities of Sussex, England; Stockholm, Sweden; and the London School of Economics (University of London).  He has been a United States Information Agency Visiting Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  He has authored numerous articles on European history and has written The Historical Atlas of Asia, The Historical Atlas of Europe, The Historical Atlas of the American Revolution, and The Historical Atlas of the Bible.

If you are looking for an excellent explanation of the history of Native Americans, this is an excellent choice. I read this text for my college history course and learned a great amount of information. I highly recommend this book.

Exactly what every car owner needs.

The only negative thing I can say is that the wiring diagrams are only very generic and don't actually show where wires run through the vehicle. This isn't even enough to take off a star because I don't think any company, even honda, makes those diagrams.

Even if you're not a DIYer you should have this book handy for tips on scheduled maintenance and being able to check that part the shop says you need to have replaced. ~$20 is much cheaper than paying $200 for that flux capacitor.

I worked in an auto shop in college and all the mechanics I worked with preferred Chiltons manuals over any other with the exception of factory service manuals. Lots of pictures and thorough descriptions of the procedures you need to follow to fix your problem. Was exactly what I needed!

Deeply Inspiring!

I've been devouring books by CEO's and management leaders for the last few months as I'm starting my own venture. Most offer good advice interspersed with anecdotes and a bit of self congratulatory trumpet blowing. They tend to lack the day-to-day and long term tactics you need to get your idea out into the world. You pick what you can and try to shoe horn the scattered ideas into your business plan. However, I was totally knocked over by the impact this book has had on me. Mike describes in simple to understand terms how to ignite and fan an unstoppable fire of enthusiasm in both the inventor or leader, and how to transmit this to a team around him or her.

I've been struggling to put together an inspiring and compelling business plan for my idea for about 6 months, which has led me to doubt the idea, and therefore make the task of creating interest amongst potential supporters difficult.

I put down the book having devoured it, and penned a concise, grand and unashamedly bold plan. The impact it has had is difficult to measure. Suddenly everyone around me is really enthused and excited for the project. My enthusiasm has become infectious. The future looks so exciting!

What is clear is that this special little book is a must read for every manager, leader or team. It is the distillate of 20 years of cutting edge management techniques and distinctions which I'm sure you will find blessed to have read. His straightforward approach makes it accessible to all.

Im not normally somebody who writes reviews with such fervour and gushyness, but something definitely shifted in my outlook on business life when reading this book. I strongly recommend it to you unless you are a competitor! In which case forget you read any of this review at all.

Your Million Watt Bulb

I really liked this book. Honestly I never heard of Mike Harris before.

Based on his experiences of building billion-dollar businesses over the years, he gives you a to-the-point guide in finding an idea and bringing it to life.

I liked its honesty & realism: Harris believes you don't to be a genius, or have a unique idea for a business to make it; just enthusiasm, a good plan, willingness to learn and unwillingness to be derailed. He uses real examples especially his own of what worked and what didn't.

What really gives this book a plus over other "make millions" books?

Its simplicity: Harris's writes clearly and effectively with a style that is very down to earth, which is critical for entrepreneurs needing insight into daunting realizations of leadership, planning, and marketing.

Overall it's a small book packed with a punch. Highly recommended.

Kick start your SilverStripe experience

The day I first heard of SilverStripe, was also the day that I discovered that a book for SilverStripe was in the works. After a few days of playing with the CMS I definitely wanted to get the book. By shear luck I got in contact with Wiley Publishing and was able to receive a review copy of the book. So hence I'm giving my first impressions here. Now I should mention that I am not a developer, and only an amateur webdesigner. I do have some basic PHP programming skills, and am familiar with the idea of Object Oriented Programming, which, as I discovered, is invaluable for working with this CMS. At this point I'm about half way through the book, and was impressed with the well structured approach. The concepts of the MVC (Model-View-Controller) structure of SilverStripe are explained clearly, and customizing the CMS is at least at its basic level straight forward. I like that every concept explained in the book is tied into an evolving web project, that gets a little more complex with each turn of the page. Again, I'm only half way through the book, and for a seasoned developer some of what is written might be trivial, but for those with limited programming skills this book will put you on the right track.
As a side note, the book does not simply rehash the documentation and tutorials on the official [...] website. It is stand alone and compliments in depth what's already out there. Thanks to the SilverStripe team for this book and for a great CMS.

This books takes you from 0 - 60 in... well very quickly anyway. For an introductory book, it does a very good job at taking you through everything that you need to know and getting you right into coding and designing a useful application. I very much recommend this book!
