"This book can certainly be recommended to those who want to learn more about the various aspects of ergospirometry and related variables. The authors succeeded in using their rich experience in exercise testing to offer a practical and systematic approach to the acquisition, interpretation and reporting of physiologic and pathophysiologic responses to exercise, to the benefit of cardiologists, pneumonologists and sports physicians." Robert Fagard, Acta Cardiologica

"...this a worthy effort and will help both clinicians who request and interpret exercise tests and exercise scientists who conduct them." Chronic Respiratory Disease Journal

"The authors...have provided a succinct, but thorough and practical, book on exercise testing and interpretation that should be of interest to physical therapists who are seeking to improve their knowledge in this area...I believe the authors have delivered on their promise to provide a practical and systematic approach to clinical exercise testing. The coverage of information is more in-depth than that typically found in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation texts. It is clearly written, liberally illustrated, and thorougly referenced." Perfect
By MsSCMomof4
This was ideal for my fifth grader who was embarrassed that he had never learned cursive. This gave him lots of practice and immediately had him linking letters to make words which was important to making quick progress. He worked on this book over the summer and now that he is back in school, he feels very confident he can write in cursive!

Beginning Traditional Cursive
By tracey w.
I purchased this with my 8 year old in mind. The schools don't seem to set cursive writing as a priority anymore, so we took it upon ourselves to teach our son cursive. It helps a lot to show him direction on letter formation. It could use more arrows to indicate direction, because he tries to start from the bottom. Highly recommend this for writing practice.

It is difficult to find a good cursive writing work book

It is difficult to find a good cursive writing work book. I like this one very much. I only wish there hundreds of pages and cursive writing takes lots of practice. I book with so few pages is impractical. I need 20 books.

Preachin' the Blues: The Life and Times of Son House, by Daniel Beaumont

In June of 1964, three young, white blues fans set out from New York City in a Volkswagen, heading for the Mississippi Delta in search of a musical legend. So begins Preachin' the Blues, the biography of American blues signer and guitarist Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. (1902 - 1988). House pioneered an innovative style, incorporating strong repetitive rhythms with elements of southern gospel and spiritual vocals. A seminal figure in the history of the Delta blues, he was an important, direct influence on such figures as Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson.
The landscape of Son House's life and the vicissitudes he endured make for an absorbing narrative, threaded through with a tension between House's religious beliefs and his spells of commitment to a lifestyle that implicitly rejected it. Drinking, womanizing, and singing the blues caused this tension that is palpable in his music, and becomes explicit in one of his finest performances, "Preachin' the Blues." Large parts of House's life are obscure, not least because his own accounts of them were inconsistent. Author Daniel Beaumont offers a chronology/topography of House's youth, taking into account evidence that conflicts sharply with the well-worn fable, and he illuminates the obscurity of House's two decades in Rochester, NY between his departure from Mississippi in the 1940s and his "rediscovery" by members of the Folk Revival Movement in 1964. Beaumont gives a detailed and perceptive account of House's primary musical legacy: his recordings for Paramount in 1930 and for the Library of Congress in 1941-42. In the course of his research Beaumont has unearthed not only connections among the many scattered facts and fictions but new information about a rumoured murder in Mississippi, and a charge of manslaughter on Long Island - incidents which bring tragic light upon House's lifelong struggles and self-imposed disappearance, and give trenchant meaning to the moving music of this early blues legend.

Review

"Beaumont's work shines especially in his depiction of House's nonrecording years... the definitive portrait of this unjustly neglected lion of American Music." --Library Journal (starred review)

"Beaumont offers vivid portraits of the pre-WWII blues scene and the mid-1960s efforts of white ethnomusicologists to rediscover and promote blues singers."
--Alan Moores, Booklist

"Daniel Beaumont, who teaches Arabic language and literature at the University of Rochester, has produced an eloquent study of House's life and travails." --Benjamin Ivry, Star-Ledger

"Preachin' the Blues achieves what any music biographer most aspires to: It makes a reader want to seek out the music it describes. And even in an iTunes age, when Son House's Levee Camp Moan can be found with a click instead of a drive to Rochester, it's still a journey with rich rewards." --Charles R. Cross, The Seattle Times

Daniel Beaumont's fine biography of Son House
By R. Weinstock
I finished reading the Son House biography, "Preachin' the Blues: The Life and Times of Son House" by Daniel Beaumont and while I intend to do a lengthier review, I thought it would serve to state my brief impressions. He makes use of much of the existing published material as well as some unpublished material such as stuff he has derived from the late Stephen Calt's research. Thankfully the book is evenly written and lacks the nasty potshots that Calt was capable of taking against others. For example, if Calt had done a House biography, one would be hard-pressed to imagine Calt praising Dick Waterman's work with Son as Son's manager.

The only negatives include the fact that photo reproduction of some images could have been better and no discography of Son's recordings including CD releases. This book actually has footnotes which is quite helpful compared to the modern tendency of having endnotes at the end of a text. Another wonderful addition to the blues literature.

If only he stayed sober.
By J Wasko
Recently, the State of Mississippi installed an extensive set of historic markers throughout the State. It is called the Mississippi Blues Trail. By traveling around the State, and with a good guide book, one can get a sense of the importance of Mississippi in the development of Blues and Rock & Roll in the early to mid twentieth century. The area north of Clarksdale to Memphis was Son House's stomping grounds. That area, roughly called Robinsonville-Tunica Resorts, is an area of big contrasts. It has all the hallmarks of upper crust Mississippi. (Big new casinos. Big levee projects, Big Plantation/Farms and agriculture) It also has residual poverty and abandoned and little used hamlets. (Hernando, Banks, Lyon, Lula, Marks, Ashland, and Dundee). Preachin the Blues mentions all these hamlets and their significance to the Blues. With the exception of Lula, not even the State of Mississippi is up to speed with this. This is a major strength of this book, and it should be read before anyone travels or vacations on the Mississippi Blues Trail. It would add a lot to the experience.
By the time of the Blues revival in the early 1960s, Son House was the last man standing of the early Delta foundation players. Charley Patton and Robert Johnson were dead. Son House had been living in Rochester, NY for 20 years, and indulging in alcoholism. He could have been a giant. He could have been a contenda. The drinking ruined all of this. Think of Louis Armstrong to Jazz, Duke Ellington to big band Jazz, and BB King to modern day Blues. That could have been Son House to the early Delta Blues. Preachin the Blues tends to give Son House a pass on this. And the book points out that Howlin Wolf doesn't give Son House a pass on this. And neither does the verdict of history. In my opinion, that's the only shortcoming of this book. I would have deducted a 1/4 star, but the software won't allow it.
It's a great book. But it's really tragic that Son House wasn't able to offer more.

Justice for Eddie!
By Howard Bleach
One of the finest books on the subject of blues I have read. Makes a great companion to Calt's book on Skip James, though Beaumont's tone is decidedly less caustic and defamatory. The only real villain in Beaumont's book seems to be Alan Lomax, who is cast as an opportunistic sort, but mostly, the book is heavy on facts and light on conjecture and gossip. Given what I knew about House before from various accounts (such as Segrest and Hoffman's Howlin' Wolf biography, Moanin' At Midnight), I was surprised and delighted to find that the man was occasionally humble and frequently benevolent, in direct contrast to some of his contemporaries (again, Skip James, who seemed like a pretty hard guy to like), and not merely a drunken has-been, as he has often been lamentably painted. An indispensable book on a fascinating subject. Highest recommendation.

Nice short story for American Girls fans.
By Rebecca Herman
Nine-year-old Kaya and her family have traveled to the Big River to trade and visit with other tribes. While there, Kaya meets another girl her age, Spotted Owl, who is one of the River People. When Kaya looses a race against Spotted Owl, she becomes jealous of her. Her jealousy becomes even worse when Speaking Rain, Kaya's adopted sister, begins to spend time with Spotted Owl. However, Kaya must overcome her jealousy to work together with Spotted Owl during a crisis.

This was a nice short story that fans of American Girls books, particularly those who especially enjoyed the Kaya books, are sure to enjoy. It is historically accurate about what life was like for a young Nez Perce girl in 1764, and has beautiful illustrations and a nice message for young girls.

Another excellent Kaya story
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Kaya’aton’my’, a nine-year-old Native-American girl growing up among the Nez Perce people in 1764. In this book, when Kaya losses a footrace against a girl from another tribe, she becomes jealous; but things go from bad to worse when it turns out that this same girl has become friends with Kaya’s sister, Speaking Rain. Eventually, though, Kaya realizes that her jealousy has gone too far, and when a crisis hits, Kaya learns that there is much to be gained by working together.

This is another excellent American Girl story. My twelve-year-old daughter is a great fan of Kaya, and I must admit that I like the stories as well. I like the lesson that Kaya learns in this story, plus I like the story and illustrations for themselves. This is a very good book, one that my daughter and I both highly recommend.

Taboo, by Franz Steiner

Scholars have been trying to explain taboo customs ever since Captain Cook discovered them in Polynesia over 200 years ago. The subject has been treated at length, but none of the theories has more than a limited validity, so numerous are the taboos recorded and so diverse the societies in which they occur.
This book contains chapters on:
· Taboo as a Victorian invention
· The complicated taboos in the Pentateuch
· Taboos in Polynesia

Wonderful!
By Chelsea
I bought this book as a text for my "Introduction to Poetry" class this semester. Being a poetry nerd, I expected that I would enjoy the class, but I am even more head-over-heels than I would have expected!! This book is wonderfully laid out and includes hundreds of treasured poems. I especially like the organization; rather than having the poetry in chronological order, the editor put the poems in chapters according to different aspects of poetry (i.e. tone, speaker, meter, etc.), which may put everything from Anne Bradstreet to Sylvia Plath in a single chapter.

I'm in love. I read this book on my days off, simply for the joy of reading wonderful poetry. Whether you choose to buy this as a textbook or simply to read for fun, this is an anthology you can't pass up. I hope to use this in my future teaching career.

This is a nice way to settle back in with poetry if you have been away from it for a while. Hunter gives us a collection of outstanding writings from the western tradition. There is enough about form and structure to add to our appreciation of the artists' work without distracting from the meaning and emotion.
There are a few chapters at the end that are very "textbookish" but they are brief and do not invade too much on the worth of the volume as a collection for people who do not plan to write "about poetry".

Poetry from every angle: great selections, great commentary
By A Customer
When a friend gave me the Third Edition of this fine book some years ago, I couldn't have guessed how much pleasure I would get out of it. I now keep a copy in my office at work. At spare moments I pick a poem at random. I often find myself reading the poems around it, and the editor's commentary as well. Just reading the section introductions sucks you into reading all the poems in a section. This is the best collection for instilling or maintaining a love of poetry--I'm giving my doughter a copy today.

Campana Brothers: Complete Works (So Far)From Rizzoli and Albion Gallery

The comprehensive monograph on one of the most celebrated bodies of design in recent decades.

Inspired and distilled from Brazil’s street and carnival cultures, Humberto and Fernando Campana have consistently produced gleefully "imperfect" designs that challenge the modernist hierarchy of form and function and the relationship of art and utility. Key figures in the "design art" movement, the Campanas’ work has been highly sought after by collectors and auctioned for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Brazilian-born brothers cite their country’s unique culture as integral to each object, often using materials from São Paolo’s favelas in their work as both inspiration and as functional parts. In their hands, coils of rope, stuffed alligators, and Bubble Wrap are transformed into shapes of unexpectedly graceful chairs, lounges, and other pieces of highly functional if improbable furniture. This element of playfulness has become a signature of their work, demonstrating an ability to imbue each piece with sophisticated humor and unpredictable form. A highly anticipated monograph, the first of their career, this book contains newly commissioned photography and detailed information on all of the Campanas’ designs, including prototypes, rare one-offs, and limited and mass-production pieces. In addition, four illuminating essays by experts in the design field make this the book on the Campanas for years to come.

Their new monograph, Campana Brothers: Complete Works (So Far), which is published by Rizzoli, may help explain the method behind what often seems like madness." ~New York Times T Magazine Blog

DESIGN at its best!
By B. Olson
This monograph on the Campana Brothers is DESIGN at its best! Fernando and Humberto Campana, based in Sao Paulo, are cutting edge designers who challenge the way we think about objects. Their work (so far) covers a wide range oeuvre of furniture, installations, lighting and objects. Their work is inspired by nature as well as by the urban slums of Rio. They are often preoccupied with recycling and at times add items of kitsch to challenge their audience.

Some of their designs are custom-made and move directly from workshop to museums. Other pieces are in limited editions that few individuals can afford. But they have also produced designs offered by Alessi, Lacoste, etc that are available to the mass marketplace. ALL inspire and ALL are collectibles! Few books have been published on their work. This book's cover (also designed by the Campana Brothers) in bright colors and fabulous stitching is another collectible that one and all will want to own.

Great Book!!
By J. Cameron
If you are looking for the complete works of the Campana Brothers, this is the book. I purchased two, one for me and another for a friend. Only surprise I had was to find that the books have different colored covers. This is kind of cool, and something the Campanas gave a lot of thought to. John

Give me your nerds, your freaks, your huddled outcasts yearning to breathe free. Stick them in Boy Scout uniforms and you’ll have the Hurt Patrol—a sorry bunch of teen rejects who will never make Eagle.

Welcome to the club

Beau has been scouting since first grade. Not because he loves it, but because his dad does. It’s the only thing they’ve ever bonded over, what with Beau’s dad being into sports, beer, and brawling. So when they move to yet another Midwest town, Beau expects the usual Boy Scout experience, filled with horribleness and insults. Instead he finds something else entirely. Kicked out of every other patrol, their little band of brothers is equal parts nuts and awesome. For the first time, people are watching Beau’s back instead of throwing things at it. Nice. Novel. And also necessary, when you’re dealing with parents splitting up, crushes, first love, and coming out.

The first—and only—rule of Hurt Patrol: We are never going to win—but if you’re outcast elsewhere, you’ll do just fine here.

Straightforward But with Poor Character Voices
By Shelumiel
*Actual rating: 2.5 out 5 stars.*

Once in a while, we stumble upon books that affect us so deeply we feel forever changed after closing the last pages. Then there are those that we abhor so much it's not funny. But every so often we come across ones that we feel indifferent to. Stories we don't have strong opinions for, for better or worse. The Hurt Patrol is such one cookie.

One thing I like about this novel is how it depicts bullying as something that is not cool and that you can actually take actions to alleviate, if not wholly prevent, the blows. Sadly, however, that's it. I had hopes for this book. The synopsis got me—the underdog trope—but I didn't feel any connection with the characters. And that may have something to do with the length of the book, because it's quite a short read, which didn't leave much room for characterization. I mean, I know I'm supposed to sympathize with them. But it didn't really come. Beau with his deprecating father and terrible coming-out episode. I wanted to be touched by his story, but all the time there's an air of detachment I cannot quite shake off. Even the family story arc. I love family drama as much as the next person, but here the parents are one-dimensional, especially Beau's father. The narrator, Rusty, is humdrum. And up until the end, Rusty's motives for running away weren't explained. (But maybe it's because Beau's story was the point; I don't know.)

There are neat lines every now and then, which is helpful. But it bums me out when I feel apathetic about a book and that's the case with The Hurt Patrol, so much so that when a scoutmaster was talking deep talks, it fell flat. I appreciate what the author's getting at, I really do, but I wasn't invested in the characters enough to be fully hit by the emotional impact.

I'm antsy writing negative reviews (this counts as negative, right? Right), as I would rather prefer sharing things that I love. But here it is. The Hurt Patrol is a straightforward story that has cardboard characters. As with all my other reviews, this is highly subjective. You might enjoy stuff I do not and vice versa.

Read the book first
By Liviania
So many of the questions I had when reading THE HURT PATROL where answered when I realized it was a companion novella to a book I hadn't read, set during that book. I honestly don't know how I manage to select this book for review without knowing that fact, but manage I did.

Even knowing that, I think some aspects could be improved. The meat of THE HURT PATROL is layered between two frames. The outermost layer is that Rusty is writing this down as an essay for her teacher. The next layer is that Beau is telling Rusty this story in the car, on their way to Forks, Washington (AKA Twilight town). Both of these layers add little to the story. It neither comes across like someone writing an essay nor someone speaking about their experiences. I assume Mary McKinley was trying to make it sound like BEAU, LEE, THE BOMB, & ME. Given that this is a companion novella, however, I think she could've cut to the chase and just put it in Beau's point of view.

THE HURT PATROL is essentially one long, somewhat meandering flashback. It covers Beau's past during his parents' divorce, figuring out that he's gay, losing his best friends, coming to find confidence in himself with the worst Boy Scout ever, and getting gay bashed. It's certainly an ambitious novella. Unfortunately, I can see why it didn't make the main book. Beau's story is a touch shapeless, particularly when shoved into the frame of a road trip that goes nowhere because it happens in another book.

There are glimmers of greatness. Beau's dad is a piece of work, admonishing his son not to be a sissy and otherwise berating him and his mother. Yet, Beau still sides with him in a pivotal fight, unable to keep himself from seeking his father's approval and love. It's an excellent glimpse of how complicated families can be, and how children can still unconditionally love parents who don't deserve it.

I think fans of BEAU, LEE, THE BOMB, & ME will probably enjoy THE HURT PATROL, especially if Beau is their favorite character and they want to know more about him. It was a bit hard for me to get into without that knowledge, since it's mostly a character sketch. It wasn't terrible, but I just kept feeling as I was reading that I was missing something big, something that would explain how this story was structured. And I guess I was.

Smiled through my tears...
By Prof Kitty
Sad and funny and full of biting wit; when I got it I didn't understand it was a prequel to her debut novel, Beau, Lee, The Bomb & Me, but once that was clear I found it a wonderful read. Beau's unstated sadness at how he and his father's relationship devolved sounds notes that are truthful and heartbreaking. I have ordered her sequel Rusty Summer and look forward to reviewing that soon, as well.
