The Metaphorical Suicide - A Guide to Hyperawareness, by Morgue

You must kill who you aren't to become who you are. Cultural brainwashing has shaped you into who you are today. You are not based on YOU at all but on what outside influences have decided you should be. You are not who you are.

Not everyone has the same level of awareness, in actuality, the difference between an individual with low self awareness and an individual with hyperawareness is similar to the difference in consciousness between an instinctual animal and a self aware human. The aim of this book is to notify the reader that different levels of consciousness exist and how one can begin to achieve these higher levels of consciousness. Like a bodybuilder who must train to increase their muscle mass, one can increase their awareness by pushing and exploring the mind.

This book also seeks to notify the reader of the cultural conditioning that has been installed into the minds of humanity to limit their consciousness. It outlines the dangers of religion and morality and how they greatly hinder growth as an individual and humanity at large. This book is not about faith, belief, conspiracy theory or mysticism. In fact, if you are a dogmatic religious believer or are closed minded in any way, this book is not for you. This book contains rational arguments, logic, philosophy, and mental techniques for consciousness expansion. Hyperawareness is the quintessence of logic and reason. There are many books out there promising you enlightenment and "spiritual awakening". This book gives you the truth about consciousness expansion without the fairytale garbage. It provides methods to destroy mental barriers, to structure and organize the mind rationally for the maximization of consciousness, and techniques to explore the mind via marijuana and personality deconstruction.

The Paradigm Shift is near.

You Are Not Who You Are
By ShadowMagick
It’s quite a shock to be told you are not who you are, but this book will show you how true that is and how essential it is to expand your consciousness and become who you really are. Although some familiarity with philosophical concepts is helpful, it is not required, as the author’s writing is clear and unpretentious, and his ability to present complex material in the simplest possible terms without condescension makes the book accessible to younger readers as well. But be warned. This isn’t a romp through a consciousness-expanding fantasyland. You’ll learn about the advantages that individuals with higher awareness have over those with lower awareness and the effects of that situation on society. You’ll discover how you’ve been programmed by a number of external forces and how that programming has shaped the way you interpret reality. And you will be presented with practical, systematic instructions on how to remove all your existing conditioning and explore the ultimate reality of the mind. Be prepared to have all your current beliefs scrutinized under the impartial light of reason. You will be given the tools with which to examine these beliefs and determine which should be kept and which must be discarded, but only you can do the required work. It is obvious that the author has accepted the fact that most people will not have the inner strength to achieve hyperawareness, and he is brutally truthful about the intensity of the work involved and how close one must venture to the edge of sanity in the process; however, he relates his own journey with an honesty that conveys an almost overwhelming need to inspire as many people as he can to escape from their mental prisons, expand their consciousness, and live their lives in constant pursuit of their highest potential.

Intelligently written and eloquently explained
By Ashley J
No prior knowledge of philosophy is required to enjoy its contents. Working definitions are provided and the author takes you on a great mental journey through reason, while breaking down some heavy philosophical and psychological theories and tenets into cleverly chosen allegories to illustrate his points. He presents ancient knowledge in a new and fresh way, surely to be enjoyed by both seasoned readers and laymen alike. This book reads like a mental time bomb, sure to disrupt your mechanical, ho-hum, drone existence. Tick...tick....tick....BOOM! Are you ready?

A Written Treat.
By Danielle Davidson
My, my, what a beautiful mind. Carefully and consicely written, this book is laid out in a fashion that allows the text to be easily understood and mentally digested. The feelings of familiarity on plenty of perceptions of what IS, the thought processes were so eloquently written that I could not put this book down. Thank you, Morgue, for shedding light on the gray areas that befell my mind. You have helped to progress my journey, my learning, my mental dissection of this world, and my existence. This was truly a pleasure. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone looking for more than just the gloss over the mental pond, this has so much depth, learn to swim.

Money is one of society's great taboos, yet for most people it is one of life's most important considerations. Through a selection of interviews, this book explores people's attitudes to personal finance. A survey by American Express showed that money is the biggest cause of domestic strife, and that couples' decisions about money were much more heated and painful than about almost any other subject.

This was my introduction to the author. I enjoy her writing and forthright, well researched opinions. I found the subject matter pretty confronting at times as she really did make me look at my views of money, success etc. it was certainly a book that has stayed with me and affected my perspective which is as much as you can ask of any book!

Note on the Student Value Edition...
By christine
This book was required text for a class. Pretty good overall, content is easy to understand and uses many examples. However, a few things to keep in mind:

- The student value edition is not binded. It arrives as a stack of paper with 3-holes punched. You will need a binder if you purchase this edition.

- Lots of practice questions but no answers! This pretty much makes the practice questions useless. The instructor said we have to contact the publisher for the answers. Given that there are 20 practice questions per chapter, most of us did not bother.

- This edition does not include the Accounting Lab CD. The instructor said the CD contains more practice questions and supplemental content which may be useful for studying, but is not necessary component of the book.

Do NOT buy this book here!!
By B.R.
I purchased this book on August 21, 2013. Financial Accounting, Student Value Edition (9th Edition) Loose Leaf. The book description was as follows:

Package includes:
0132349396 / 9780132349390 MyEducationKit -- Valuepack Access Card
0133049345 / 9780133049343 NEW MyAccountingLab with Pearson eText -- Access Card -- for Financial Accounting

I ordered this item through amazon prime, free 2-day shipping. The first problem I had was the shipping delay. Though it arrived the day after it shipped, it did not ship until September 4, 2 weeks after the class I needed it for had begun. This was my own problem, however, as the order confirmation included the delay, but I did not notice until a few days after I placed the order.

The real problem with this order was the misleading book description. It DID NOT include the myAccountingLab access card, which I need for my class. After speaking with amazon customer service, I found that even though the page I ordered it from said it was included, this was a description for the wrong product. In the box where you can select between the kindle, hardcover, and looseleaf versions of the text, you must click the minuscule plus sign next to looseleaf to see a more expensive version that includes the access code. There is no indication that this step is necessary to receive the code, and I would not have known had I not spoken with amazon customer service.

In short, you should look elsewhere to find this text. The shipping delay and missing access code were very irritating, but that aside, the loose leaf edition is just an unbound stack of 3-hole punched papers. Look for a new copy at your university bookstore, and save yourself a massive headache.

Always Been a Fan of the Horngren Series
By A dad
What I like about the Horngren Series is the practicality of it. This series has always managed to hold the number of pages down to about 200 less than its quite excellent major competitors (Weygandt-Kieso-Kimmel and Wild-Larson-Chiappetta). It's still a large-dimension hardcover and this Horngren book has 752 pages. That's plenty of space for a student, and Horngren provides more than enough easy-access online materials as well.

Horngren is mainly used by university students although Weygandt-Kieso-Kimmel have gained market share. But Horngren also recognizes that most financial accountants do not need an accounting degree. They need to understand accounting and know how to do their specific jobs. In fact, I've long noticed the small ratio of accountants working in accounting departments that actually have accounting degrees. For them, the Horngren Series is well-designed in addition to serving the needs of college students.

Horngren places emphasis on the accounting cycle. In doing so, this textbook covers the actual job duties within an accounting department quite efficiently. That's why I also purchase Horngren Series books. I purchase them for staff as well as additional resource material to help me prepare when I teach accounting courses at the university level. Because if its special niche and top-notch editing, I would expect this series to last through many more editions.

Just make sure to get the latest edition.

Agile Software Development, Principles, Patterns, and Practices, by Robert C. Martin

Written by a software developer for software developers, this book is a unique collection of the latest software development methods. The author includes OOD, UML, Design Patterns, Agile and XP methods with a detailed description of a complete software design for reusable programs in C++ and Java. Using a practical, problem-solving approach, it shows how to develop an object-oriented application—from the early stages of analysis, through the low-level design and into the implementation. Walks readers through the designer's thoughts — showing the errors, blind alleys, and creative insights that occur throughout the software design process. The book covers: Statics and Dynamics; Principles of Class Design; Complexity Management; Principles of Package Design; Analysis and Design; Patterns and Paradigm Crossings. Explains the principles of OOD, one by one, and then demonstrates them with numerous examples, completely worked-through designs, and case studies. Covers traps, pitfalls, and work arounds in the application of C++ and OOD and then shows how Agile methods can be used. Discusses the methods for designing and developing big software in detail. Features a three-chapter, in-depth, single case study of a building security system. For Software Engineers, Programmers, and Analysts who want to understand how to design object oriented software with state of the art methods.

Agile development is the ability to develop software quickly, in the face of rapidly changing requirements. In order to achieve this agility, we need to employ practices that provide the necessary discipline and feedback. We need to employ design principles that keep our software flexible and maintainable, and we need to know the design patterns that have been shown to balance those principles for specific problems. This book is an attempt to knit all three of these concepts together into a functioning whole.

This book describes those principles, patterns, and practices and then demonstrates, how they are applied by walking through dozens of different case studies. More importantly, the case studies are not presented as complete works. Rather, they are designs in progress. You will see the designers make mistakes, and you will observe how they identify the mistakes and eventually correct them. You will see them puzzle over conundrums and worry over ambiguities and trade-offs. You will see the act of design.

The Devil Is in the Details

This book contains a lot of Java and C++ code. I hope you will carefully read that code since, to a large degree, the code is the point of the book. The code is the actualization of what this book 6~ '' has to say.

There is a repeating pattern to this book. It consists of a series of case studies of varying sizes. Some are very small, and some require several chapters to describe. Each case study is preceded by /material that is meant to prepare you for it. For example, the Payroll case study is preceded by chapters describing the object-oriented design principles and patterns used in the case study.

The book begins with a discussion of development practices and processes. That discussion is punctuated by a number of small case studies and examples. From there, the book moves on to the topic of design and design principles, and then to some design patterns, more design principles that govern packages, and more patterns. All of these topics are accompanied by case studies.

So prepare yourself to read some code and to pore over some UML diagrams. The book you are about to read is very technical, and its lessons, like the devil, are in the details.

A Little History

Over six years ago, I wrote a book entitled Designing Object-Oriented C++ Applications using the Booch Method. It was something of magnum opus for me, and I was very pleased with the result and with the sales.

This book started out as a second edition to Designing, but that's not how it turned out. Very little remains of the original book in these pages. Little more than three chapters have been carried through, and those chapters have been massively changed. The intent, spirit, and many of the lessons of the book are the same. And yet, I've learned a tremendous amount about software design and development in the six years since Designing came out. This book reflects that learning.

What a half-decade! Designing came out just before the Internet collided with the planet. Since then, the number of abbreviations we have to deal with has doubled. We have Design Patterns, Java, EJB, RMI, J2EE, XML, XSLT, HTML, ASP, JSP, Servlets, Application Servers, ZOPE, SOAP, C#, .NET, etc., etc. Let me tell you, it's been hard to keep the chapters of this book reasonably current!

The Booch Connection

In 1997, I was approached by Grady Booch to help write the third edition of his amazingly successful Object-Oriented Analysis and Design with Applications. I had worked with Grady before on some projects, and I had been an avid reader and contributor to his various works, including UML. So I accepted with glee. I asked my good friend Jim Newkirk to help out with the project.

Over the next two years, Jim and I wrote a number of chapters for the Booch book. Of course, that effort meant that I could not put as much effort into this book as I would have liked, but I felt that the Booch book was worth the contribution. Besides, this book was really just a second edition of Designing at the time, and my heart wasn't in it. If I was going to say something, I wanted to say something new and different.

Unfortunately, that version of the Booch book was not to be. It is hard to find the time to write a book during normal times. During the heady days of the ".com" bubble, it was nearly impossible. Grady got ever busier with Rational and with new ventures like Catapulse. So the project stalled. Eventually, I asked Grady and Addison Wesley if I could have the chapters that Jim and I wrote to include in this book. They graciously agreed. So several of the case study and UML chapters came from that source.

The Impact of Extreme Programming

In late 1998, XP reared its head and challenged our cherished beliefs about software development. Should we create lots of UML diagrams prior to writing any code, or should we eschew any kind of diagrams and just write lots of code? Should we write lots of narrative documents that describe our design, or should we try to make the code narrative and expressive so that ancillary documents aren't necessary? Should we program in pairs? Should we write tests before we write production code? What should we do?

This revolution came at an opportune time for me. During the middle to late 90s, Object Mentor was helping quite a few companies with object-oriented (OO) design and project management issues. We were helping companies get their projects done. As part of that help, we instilled our own attitudes and practices into the teams. Unfortunately, these attitudes and practices were not written down. Rather, they were an oral tradition that was passed from us to our customers.

By 1998, I realized that we needed to write down our process and practices so that we could better articulate them to our customers. So, I wrote many articles about process in the C++ Report. These articles missed the mark. They were informative, and in some cases entertaining, but instead of codifying the practices and attitudes that we actually used in our projects, they were an unwitting compromise to values that had been imposed upon me for decades. It took Kent Beck to show me that.

The Beck Connection

In late 1998, as I was fretting over codifying the Object-Mentor process, I ran into Kent's work on Extreme Programming (XP). The work was scattered through Ward Cunningham's wiki and was mixed with the writings oil many others. Still, with some work and diligence I was able to get the gist of what Kent was talking about. I was intrigued, but skeptical. Some of the things that XP talked about were exactly on target for my concept of a development process. Other things, however, like the lack of an articulated design step, left me puzzled.

Kent and I could not have come from more disparate software circumstances. He was a recognized Smalltalk consultant, and I was a recognized C++ consultant. Those two worlds found it difficult to communicate with one' another. There was an almost Kuhnian paradigm gulf between them.

Under other circumstances, I would never have asked Kent to write an article for the C++ Report. But the congruence of our thinking about process was able to breech the language gulf. In February of 1999, I met Kent in Munich at the OOP conference. He was giving a talk on XP in the room across from where I was giving a talk on principles of OOD. Being unable to hear that talk, I sought Kent out at lunch. We talked about XP, and I asked him to write an article for the C++ Report. It was a great article about an incident in which Kent and a coworker had been able to make a sweeping design change in a live system in a matter of an hour or so.

Over the next several months, I went through the slow process of sorting out my own fears about XP My greatest fear was in adopting a process in which there is no explicit up-front design step. I found myself balking at that. Didn't I have an obligation to my clients, and to the industry as a whole, to teach them that design is important enough to spend time on?

Eventually, I realized that I did not really practice such a step myself. Even in all the articles and books I had written about design, Booch diagrams, and UML diagrams, I had always used code as a way to verify that the diagrams were meaningful. In all my customer consulting, I would spend an hour or two helping them to draw diagrams and then I would direct them to explore those diagrams with code. I came to understand that though XP's words about design were foreign (in a Kuhnian sense), the practices behind the words were familiar to me.

My other fears about XP were easier to deal with. I had always been a closet pair programmer. XP gave me a way to come out of the closet and revel in my desire to program with a partner. Refactoring, continuous integration, and customer on-site were all very easy for me to accept. They were very close to the way I already advised my customers to work.

One practice of XP was a revelation for me. Test-first design sounds innocuous when you first hear it. It says to write test cases before you write production code. All production code is written to make failing test cases pass. I was not prepared for the profound ramifications that writing code this way would have. This practice has completely transformed the way I write software, and transformed it for the better. You can see that transformation in this book. Some of the code written in this book was written before 1999. You won't find test cases for that code. On the other hand, all of the code written after 1999 is presented with test cases, and the test cases are typically presented first. I'm sure you'll note the difference.

So, by the fall of 1999 I was convinced that Object Mentor should adopt XP as its process of choice and that I should let go of my desire to write my own process. Kent had done an excellent job of articulating the practices and process of XP, and my own feeble attempts paled in comparison.

Organization

This book is organized into six major sections followed by several appendices.

  • Section 1: Agile Development
This section describes the concept of agile development. It starts with the Manifesto of the Agile Alliance, provides an overview of Extreme Programming (XP), and then goes into many small case studies that illuminate some of the individual XP practices—especially those that have an impact upon the way we design and write code.
  • Section 2: Agile Design
The chapters in this section talk about object-oriented software design. The first chapter asks the question, What is Design? It discusses the problem of, and techniques for, managing complexity. Finally, the section culminates with the principles of object-oriented class design.
  • Section 3: The Payroll Case Study
This is the largest and most complete case study in the book. It describes the object-oriented design and C++ implementation of a simple batch payroll system. The first few chapters in this section describe the design patterns that the case study encounters. The final two chapters contain the full case study.
  • Section 4: Packaging the Payroll System
This section begins by describing the principles of object-oriented package design. It then goes on to illustrate those principles by incrementally packaging the classes from the previous section.
  • Section 5: The Weather Station Case Study
This section contains one of the case studies that was originally planned for the Booch book. The Weather Station study describes a company that has made a significant business decision and explains how the Java development team responds to it. As usual, the section begins with a description of the design patterns that will be used and then culminates in the description of the design and implementation.
  • Section 6: The ETS Case Study
This section contains a description of an actual project that the author participated in. This project has been in production since 1999. It is the automated test system used to deliver and score the registry examination for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
  • UML Notation Appendices:
The first two appendices contains several small case studies that are used to describe the UML notation.
  • Miscellaneous Appendices

If I Only Bought Two OOD Books, This Would be One of Them
By Amazon Customer
I don't think I've given another design/programming book 5 stars before. This book deserves it-- it could easily replace a half dozen books on my shelf, and it probably will.
Martin focuses on the why's and the wherefores of current OOD methodologies. He doesn't try to sell Agile Processes in this book. Instead, he explains a number of current practices that might be loosely grouped under the 'Agile' name. He anchors his discussion in a set of principles that drive the design process. Then he shows how software patterns can be used to put these principles into practice.
Patterns are explained and demonstrated in the context of three case studies. The case studies (a payroll system, a weather monitoring system, and an exam testing system) have the feel of day-to-day problems. One of my chief complaints with other books has been the use of esoteric case studies-- unless I work for Microsoft, I'm not likely to write a word processor anytime soon. Okay, so maybe I won't write a weather station either, but it comes a lot closer to what I will do!
The patterns discussion in this book is down-to-earth and easily understood. I have struggled over the 'Gang of Four' book ('Gamma et Al, 'Design Patterns') for well over a year. Bob Martin's book has cut through a lot of the clutter and confusion. It has been a great help to me in understanding why, where, and when to use different patters. And the explanation of UML in the book's appendices is one of the best I have seen. I can't think of a better way to learn UML than to sit down with these Appendices and Martin Fowler's 'UML Distilled'.
This is one of the two books I would recommend to an OOD newbie. The other would be 'Object Design' by Rebecca Wirfs Brock and Alan McKean. These books provide a solid grounding in object-oriented design, while requiring a very reasonable expenditure of time and effort.

Clear, specifc, applicable
By wiredweird
The bulk of this book describes OO design principles. They're presented in a readable, useful, and well-organized way. Often they just clarify and put a name to something you've probably been doing anyway. The standard Dependency Inversion Principle is there, for one. (I'm glad to see that other people have trouble with the name. By today's reckoning, there's nothing inverted about it, but the name dates back to less enlightened times.) Others, like the Interface Segregation Principle, are less well known but reinforce lots of other good practices, such as data hiding and prevention of "interface leakage".
The "Agile" section is blessedly short, and doesn't much contaminate the otherwise good presentation elsewhere in the book. There's a lot of good to be extracted from the agility movement, but there's a lot of rabid dogmatism too. Martin managed to keep it well under control. He presented the Manifesto (ugh) early on, but that was the worst of it.
A few points marred the book, but only slightly, The drawings came across as "cute" - unprofessional and tangential to the topics at hand. Semi-fictional conversations in books like this always seem fatuous to me, and Ch.6 was no exception. The technical content managed to withstand this presentation anyway.
This book has lots of good ideas. It relates those ideas well to common and useful design patterns. A few aspects of the book tried to be funny, but came across as more annoying than anything else. That was only a few, though - the meaningful content of the book came through despite those flaws.
I recommend this book to any serious student or practitioner of OO design and implementation. I really mean "any," since even project-scarred veterans are likely to see some of their hard won knowledge set into clear text and into the context of other ideas.

Best O-O design book in this year
By Mike Meng
I knew the book would be a great one before read it. But now, after I read some of its chapters, I know I underestimated it.
I love to read Uncle Bob's books and articles. His previous book "Designing Object-Oriented C++ Application with Booch Method" is a real gem, I learn much a lot from it, maybe more than any other books on designing. The author's style is unique, he tries to guide readers to reach a good design instead of just putting the final solution in front of you. He presents the whole process of design, shows you how to think, how to verify, how to test and modify. His is a real mentor who gives you solid knowledge and solid experience by solid examples. So, I expected learn a lot from this new book.
The book shows that it's more than my expectation. It keeps the good style, plus very valuable contents. It present at least 4 aspects which are very important and useful for today's programmers:
* Agile method: The author show you you how to USE agile method. Still he tell you a lot about "Why". I'm not a XPer, but after reading the first several chapters, I think I'd give a try.
* Object-Oriented Design Principles: The book concludes 11 O-O design principles. Only these principles are worth the price of the book to me.
* Design patterns: This book teach you 23 design patterns with concrete examples -- 15 are GoF patterns, 8 are new. The emphasis is how to use patterns in real applications, instead of telling you what design patterns are and how to document them.
* UML: This book is not about UML, but it uses UML to demostrate designs. To make you feet wet, it includes two appendics, show you basic UML with, again, concrete example. I find it's much easier for me to learn UML this way.
Well, IMHO, this book is the best O-O design textbook this year, and I wonder whether there will be a better one in the next several years.

Up From Liberalism, by William F. Buckley

2016 Reprint of the 1959 edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Buckley's third book is an urbane and controversial attack on the manners and meaning of American Liberalism in the 1950s. His thesis is that the leading American liberals can be shown, in their speeches and statements, in the tacit premises that underlie their words and deeds, to be suffering from a long, but definable list of social and philosophical prejudices. "Up From Liberalism" examines the root assumptions of the Libealism of his era and asks the startling question: do the actions of prominent liberalism derive from the attributes of Liberalism?

Up From Liberalism
By Jeremy A. A. Purves
I'm a college student studying on a liberal college campus who will probably pursue a career in Constitutional law. Reading this book has helped me understand my political philosophy much more clearly. Up From Liberalism by William F. Buckley, Jr. is a witty, sagacious, and very perceptive book declaring the fresh conservative alternative to liberal establishment politics. It is a must read for anyone really serious about being a political conservative. Although most of Buckley's comments are referring to past political history in the 40's and 50's, it helps one understand the ideological battle that has been raging for years in the political spectrum. Sparkling with humour and intellectual fun, Buckley quickly dispatches of his opponents' ideas with the ease of a master swordsman. This book is still valuable to read because the philosophy of liberals today hasn't really changed. To them, Government is still the answer to all of our problems. If you are a liberal, reading this book will help you understand the arguments against your position. If you are a conservative, this book will give you enjoyment, but also valid logical proof of why one should believe in limited government. I hope that everyone even slightly interested in politics reads this book.

One of the 25 most important conservative books
By A Customer
Those who came of age politically in the 1980s or later can hardly comprehend the influence Bill Buckley had on the modern conservative movement.
He was, by far, the most attractive and thrilling conservative intellect for decades, and more than equal in debate to any liberal intellectual, as we learned on many occasions. Conservative students of my generation, confronted with an overwhelming liberal (and often unbearably smug) faculty, were greatly reassured by the knowledge that Buckley could smash the arguements of anyone on the liberal side.
Though Up From Liberalism concerns itself largely with issues that date back to the sixties, the combination of humor and erudition Buckley uses to skewer the liberal establishment gives the book a timeless appeal.

Historic

Learn to think; stop regurgitating.

I am quite fond of this book, although Buckley has written and continues to write words of great elucidation. This one has been most formative for me. It is dated in its references, but the thought process and basis for reasoning is tried and true. Highly recommended for young people; especially those who consider themselves to be in one place or another politically, but are not entirely sure of the logic behind their beliefs, and would like to begin the journey of becoming a homo sapien.

Review
"Once again, Ann Levine has written a book that anyone applying to law school must read. This new edition includes updated information, is easy to read, is brutally honest, and contains excellent advice on how to avoid common mistakes and increase your chances of being accepted at the school of your choice. Simply put, The Law School Admission Game is by far the best book about the essentials of the admissions process." --Ronald Den Otter, pre-law advisor and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Law

"A refreshingly straightforward take on the best way to apply to law school from an admissions insider." --Matthew Riley, founder of Blueprint LSAT Preparation

"I hand this book out to all of my LSAT students. It's the indispensable 'When, Where, and How' to apply to law school. (For the even more important 'Whether' and 'Why', I also love Ann's The Law School Decision Game.)" --Nathan Fox, author of Cheating the LSAT

Take it from an LSAT teacher
By Nathan Fox
For two years, I've been giving the 2009 version of The Law School Admission Game: Play Like an Expert to each one of my LSAT students. The law school application process is bewildering for a novice. This book saves my students a ton of time and headache so that they can focus their energy on the all-important LSAT.

Questions answered by this book:
--What should I write my personal statement about? How long should it be? Are any topics off-limits?
--Who should write my letters of recommendation? How many should I have?
--What's a diversity statement, and should I write one? Is it different from the personal statement?
--I have bad grades or a bad LSAT score, do I still have a chance to get in to law school?
--I have a campus disciplinary matter (or arrest) on my record. What do I do now?
--Where should I apply? When should I apply?

Ann really is the expert; she used to make admissions decisions at two law schools. And she delivers her expertise in a friendly, accessible way. This book isn't going to bore you or stress you out. It's just going to give you the information you need, quickly and concisely, so that you can start checking off the boxes and get yourself into law school.

I didn't think the older version was out of date, but I'm thrilled that Ann has updated the book and added 57 more pages of goodness. This version contains new information on the LSAC's online application procedures, a short update about "evaluations" (law schools aren't using them!) and an expanded section on LSAT prep.

Law school is a three-year investment that could leave you with $200,000 in debt. Don't take it lightly! A strong application will get you into better schools, and could lead to full ride scholarship offers. Your competition is already reading this book... you should too.

Streamlined, blunt and candid
By Vassar 2013
There's a general perception that books on law school admissions are redundant because you can "find all the information you need online" through blogs, forums, etc. While it might be true that all required information is available in the universe of law school advice on the Web, one has to work through this information and weed out a lot of hearsay, speculation and unrepresentative anecdotal evidence from unverified sources and pick and choose -- based on one's own judgement -- what to believe and what to discard. Why add to your workload in such a manner, when that time can better be spent studying for the LSAT, or writing your personal statement? Any student of the LSAT logical reasoning section knows that relying on a person's advice outside his or her field of expertise is a reasoning flaw; you'll avoid making it on test day, so try to avoid it in real life too!

Enter this book, stage left. It's a good option not because it teaches you some shamanistic technique to effect an auto-admit, but because it offers streamlined information from a verified source (read the "About the Author" section) without any of the boilerplate PR that usually attends information found on law schools' own Web sites. It's rare to receive such candid insight into the goings-on at law school admissions offices across the country.

Considering law school? Start here.
By B. Olson
Whether you just started thinking about law school or you're madly filling out applications, stop and buy this book. It's simple, direct, and to the point. And it will help you avoid the silly (and sometimes stupid) mistakes that many applicants make. (I read the first version after going to law school and teaching the LSAT for three years, and I still took away many insights and corrected a few misconceptions. It's hard to imagine any potential applicant who wouldn't benefit.)

Ann doesn't sugarcoat anything. She pulls back the veil and shows you how it all works. And although I would recommend sitting down and reading the whole thing (it's a fast read), if you're pressed for time, just use the detailed table of contents to jump to your most pressing questions.

Each chapter, in fact, is just questions and answers. The chapter on explaining your weaknesses, for example, starts out by asking "When and how should I explain my weaknesses?" After a two-paragraph answer, it then asks "How do I explain my lackluster grades?" followed by a two-page answer. And so on. Ann covers the whole application process -- from taking the LSAT to drafting a personal statement to getting scholarships and everything else in between.
