After fighting a protracted legal battle, James Meredith broke the color barrier in 1962 as the first African American student at the University of Mississippi. The riot that followed his arrival on campus seriously wounded scores of U.S. marshals and killed two civilians; more casualties than any other clash of the civil rights era. To restore order, the Kennedy administration dispatched thousands of soldiers to Oxford.
In The Price of Defiance, Charles Eagles shows that the stunning eruption of violence resulted from the "closed society's" long defiance of the civil rights movement and federal law. Using many previously untapped sources, including FBI and U.S. marshal files, army and university records, and Meredith's personal papers, Eagles provides invaluable background for understanding the historic moment by demonstrating the university's - and Mississippi's - history of aggressive resistance to desegregation from the post-World War II years on, including the deliberate flouting of federal law. Ultimately, the price of such behavior - the price of defiance - was not only the murderous riot that rocked the nation and almost closed the university but also the nation's enduring scorn for Ole Miss and Mississippi.
Eagles paints a remarkable portrait of Meredith himself by describing his unusual family background, his personal values, and his service in the U.S. Air Force, all of which prepared him for his experience at Ole Miss.
Based on extraordinary research, Eagles vividly portrays the culture of segregation and the eventual desegregation of one of the last bastions of racial segregation, Ole Miss.

An American Tragedy
By Loving Grand-dad
I graduated from Ole Miss in 1961, so I wasn't there for the riot. In fact I haven't been back on the campus since the afternoon of my graduation. But I lived through all the terrible events leading up to the riot. Billy Barton and Jim Robertson were both friends, and I saw first hand the way in which the state governemnt, the governor even, got involved in campus politics. I experienced first hand post office employees giving to the Sovereignty Commission the names and addresses of persons, including me, who received mail from "questionable sources." Every Mississippian, every Ole Miss grad, should read this book. After 1962 every single professor I knew and admired had left. Unfortunately, I read the book on Kindal. I love my Kindal for novels, but this is the sort of book that you want to be able to read the footnotes along with the text. Maybe I could have done that, but I didn't know how. Anyway, if you're reading this review you must have some interest in the subject. Buy the book.

unfortunately still relevant
By Joseph
I had the opportunity to take Eagles's class, Civil Rights Era, at Ole Miss a few years ago. While I considered it a great survey of the key moments and people from that time, none of it felt like the stirring and tragic episodes included in this detailed history of my alma mater. It should be REQUIRED reading for incoming freshmen. We have come a long way and those responsible for the progress should have buildings rededicated in their names since the current names include many racists which are surely more hurtful to the university's image than Scruggs Hall was. Despite our progress on racial problems, you can read the DM (the student newspaper) and see that racist attitudes and incidents spring up like weeds every semester. That is why students and administration and even alumni should read this book. It is a no nonsense factual account, but the emotional import of such a tragic history necessarily engages a reader and causes painful but important connections to be drawn to today. As Faulkner said, the past is never dead. It is not even past.

Told Like it Was
By Jimmyle Listenbee
This meticulously researched book is also a page-turner! A story of wisdom and commitment in most discouraging, turgid and downright mean circumstances, 'The Price of Defiance' gives us vivid characterizations of courageous, the colorful heros and conniving belly-crawlers alike who fought the battle of the integration of Mississippi. Eagles, with his courageous book (even now!), makes me proud to be a Mississippian.
