The Diary of Vaslav Nijinsky (Unexpurgated), by Vaslav Nijinsky

With an Introduction by Joan Acocella

The astonishing diaries of the great dancer, at last available in their complete form.

In December 1917, Vaslav Nijinsky, the most famous male dancer in the Western world, moved into a Swiss villa with his wife and three-year-old daughter and began to go mad. This diary, which he kept in four notebooks over six weeks, is the only sustained, on-the-spot written account we have by a major artist of the experience of entering psychosis.

A prodigy from his youth in Russia, Nijinsky came to international fame as a principal dancer in Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. After a falling-out between the two great men--who had lived openly as lovers for some time--Nijinsky struggled to build a career on his own. When psychosis struck, he began to imagine himself as married to God, indeed as God, signing his entries "God Nijinsky." Although he lived another thirty years, he never regained his sanity.

Already a classic in its earlier, bowdlerized edition, the diary now appears uncut for the first time in English, together with its previously unavailable fourth notebook. It is Nijinsky's confession and his prophecy. At the same time, it reads like a novel, portraying the terror in the Nijinsky household as the dancer plunged into madness. In her Introduction, the noted dance writer Joan Acocella explains the context of the diary and its significance in the history of modernism.

Amazon.com Review
Vaslav Nijinsky spent the final six weeks before his permanent consignment to an insane asylum as something a madman in the attic. With his family--wife, young daughters and occasionally, mother-in-law--and household staff downstairs, the legendary dancer retreated to his room in a remote Swiss villa to tangle with his burgeoning psychosis. Fearful that his wife would (as she ultimately did) commit him, and highly suspicious of the physician-cum-amateur psychiatrist who daily came by to examine him, Nijinsky perceived the diary as the only safe haven for the rambling thoughts that were overtaking him. Throughout, the anxiety and anguish are palpable, as Nijinsky writes about his disillusionment with his mentor and lover, Ballets Russes director Serge Diaghilev; his alienation from and distrust of his closest family members; and his fear of insanity and its consequential confinement. His writing becomes more obscure as the weeks progress and he examines his relationship to God, writing "I am God" at one point, and later: "God said to me, 'Go home and tell your wife that you are mad.'" As his schizophrenia evolves, the pace and style of Nijinsky's prose changes radically--toward the end he writes in abstract verse--but he remains, with a dancer's sensibility, attuned to the cadences of his environment. The noises of the household, the ringing of the phone, footsteps down the hall, smatterings of conversations overheard are all registered as a sort of accompaniment to his dance with madness and function perhaps as a final tether to reality.

Nijinsky's wife stumbled upon the diary in a locked trunk some years after her husband disappeared into the abyss of madness and soon released it for publication to feed public interest in her famous mate--but not before she sanitized the manuscript to such a degree (removing references to his homosexuality, overblown ego, bizarre paranoia, and various obsessions with bodily functions and sex acts) that its essence was obscured. Now 80 years after it was written, 20 years after its renegade editor died, and six years after the copyright that Nijinsky's daughters held expired, the unexpurgated version of the diaries faithfully restores the fascinating record of a great artist's struggle for his life.

From Publishers Weekly
One of this century's finest male dancers, Nijinsky might have become known as the greatest ballet choreographer of the modern era had his career not ended so early. Nijinsky danced professionally for only 10 years (1907-1917), and his reputation as a choreographer was established by only three ballets, all choreographed for the Ballets Russes between 1912 and 1913. Scandal surrounded his career: under Sergei Diaghilev, his lover and the impresario behind the Ballets Russes, Nijinsky choreographed The Afternoon of a Faun, which contained movements suggestive of masturbation; the premiere of his Rite of Spring, choreographed to Stravinsky's dissonant score, caused audiences to riot and storm out of the theater. After severing ties with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes at age 29, Nijinsky slid into insanity, and these diaries chronicle six weeks (January 19-March 4, 1919) of this period. The publication of this new translation (initially published in bowdlerized form in 1936), which for the first time includes a fourth journal of letters and poems, gives readers a chance to read an autobiography of a great artist during his psychological decline. This does not always make for easy reading: Nijinsky's thoughts are circuitous; he records his experience moment by moment and often breaks his train of thought to describe an incident in the next room. Although he is sometimes lucid, he often writes in contradictions and non sequiturs. Fitzlyon's excellent translation, which provides helpful and nonintrusive footnotes to explain Nijinsky's many linguistic idiosyncrasies, is complemented by Acocella's (Mark Morris) illuminating introduction. (Feb.) FYI: Acocella has just been named as the dance critic of the New Yorker.

From Library Journal
This is a thought-provoking look at the life of a man who has been called the "god of the dance." The famous Russian ballet dancer went insane in 1917, and this diary, written in six and a half weeks, records his ever more erratic thoughts, thoughts that at times become almost poetic: "I am an artist whose voice is dance," in conjunction with the more aberrant: "I am God, I am a man, I am man in God." Nijinsky documents his daily routine and carefully notes random thoughts, feelings, suspicions, and occasionally an accurate view of his true reality: "people will think I am insane because I speak of things I do not understand." Actor John Rubinstein's powerful presentation turns this audio into a one-man show, with an amazing job affecting a slight Russian/Polish accent. Nijinsky gave his last public performance when he was 29; he lived to be 61. Highly recommended for all public libraries.ATheresa Connors, Arkansas Tech Univ., Russellville

Brilliant and Illuminating

A fascinating and powerful opportunity to peer (uninterfered) into a portion of the many facets which make up a great and influential artist. Definately not for the idiot reader who thinks artists write diaries to entertain.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, by Erik Larson

Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Devil in the White City, delivers a remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power.

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.
A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.
Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2011: In the Garden of Beasts is a vivid portrait of Berlin during the first years of Hitler’s reign, brought to life through the stories of two people: William E. Dodd, who in 1933 became America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s regime, and his scandalously carefree daughter, Martha. Ambassador Dodd, an unassuming and scholarly man, is an odd fit among the extravagance of the Nazi elite. His frugality annoys his fellow Americans in the State Department and Dodd’s growing misgivings about Hitler’s ambitions fall on deaf ears among his peers, who are content to “give Hitler everything he wants.” Martha, on the other hand, is mesmerized by the glamorous parties and the high-minded conversation of Berlin’s salon society—and flings herself headlong into numerous affairs with the city’s elite, most notably the head of the Gestapo and a Soviet spy. Both become players in the exhilarating (and terrifying) story of Hitler’s obsession for absolute power, which culminates in the events of one murderous night, later known as “the Night of Long Knives.” The rise of Nazi Germany is a well-chronicled time in history, which makes In the Garden of Beasts all the more remarkable. Erik Larson has crafted a gripping, deeply-intimate narrative with a climax that reads like the best political thriller, where we are stunned with each turn of the page, even though we already know the outcome. --Shane Hansanuwat

The evil that men do
By Chris Swanson
It has been observed that for evil to win all that needs happen is for good men to do nothing. That was what the United States government did, at least officially, for much of the lead-up to World War II. Too often chances to speak out and try to stop the madness that was engulfing Germany were ignored. Too frequently the atrocities were overlooked. Too many times our response to the crisis over there was nothing, nothing, nothing...

But there were exceptions. George Messersmith, who worked at the Berlin embassy, was one of those who tried, often in vain, to bring about some change in the US policies, though he was often ignored as having too vivid of an imagination. So, too, were various Jewish groups in the USA, though they were often ignored for being Jewish. And, eventually, so did William Dodd, the United States ambassador to Germany, though he was ignored because, frankly, too many people didn't want to believe any of what was happening in Berlin.

Before reading this book I had a slightly better than average knowledge of the history of World War II and what led up to it. But even for me there were things to learn. I'd never heard of Dodd or Messersmith. Never heard of Rudolph Diels, or Ernst Hanfstaengl. I knew, at least a bit, about the Night of Long Knives and some what lead up to it, including Ernst Rohm's penchant for pretty young men, but I didn't really grasp much of what was going on that led up to it.

Now, thanks to Erik Larson's latest work, I know these people and I have a much, much improved understanding of what was going on in Germany from 1933 to 1938. Larson gives you a great "on the ground" view of what was really happening, what people thought was happening, what everyone said was happening and why the differences between these things matter. You really get a feel for how Berlin functioned, or didn't function, during this time period.

Larson's previous work, Thunderstruck, where he tried too hard to link the stories of Dr Crippen and Marconi, didn't really work for me, which was a disappointment, since The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America remains one of my favorite books. I'm happy to say this book is at least as good and engaging as "Devil in the White City". This is an excellent, well-written, suspenseful book. Even though I did know the fates of some of the people involved, Larson's writing was still engaging enough to keep me interested, and to occasionally make me wonder if my memory of their lives was wrong (it wasn't).

Anyone with even a casual interest in the events leading up to the war will find this an invaluable read. It's easily the best book I've read this year, and likely to stay that way. A truly wonderful read!

Another telling work by Erik Larson
By Steven Peterson
This is the fourth book written by Erik Larson that I have read. In my view, this quartet is a pretty powerful body of work: The Devil in the White City, Thunderstruck, and Isaac's Storm)--and now In the Garden of Beasts. As with Larson's other works, there are several layers to this work. Larson begins by noting that (Page xiv): "This is a work of nonfiction."

At one level, this is a portrayal of a family. Key characters are William Dodd, an academic desperate to write a book on the South who finds himself oddly enough tapped to become the American Ambassador to Germany in the very early years of Hitler's rule of the country. There is also considerable detail given to Dodd's daughter, Martha. She was coming off a failed marriage and she (and her brother and William's wife) accompanied Dodd in his service in Germany.

At another level, the book is about the gathering horror of the Third Reich. Sometimes, Germany seems like a modern, civilized country. At other times, though, the darkness of Nazism manifests itself. One small vignette: H. V. Kaltenborn's advocacy of Germany--and his family's terror at a Hitler demonstration where they were frightened by thugs for not carrying out the German salute with the arm. Other small incidents that portend what is to come pop up over the course of the work, providing a dark backdrop to the surface story.

We see Dodd's interaction with key leaders such as Goebbels and Goring. We read of him trying to protect American interests while becoming concerned about what was happening in Germany. And seeing how his superiors did not want to hear negative reports from him. His daughter? She enjoyed her freedom with a series of romances--including with the famous World War I pilot, Udet, and--extraordinarily enough--the head of the Gestapo, Diels .

There is tautness to the work, as it moves toward its climax with the Night of the Long Knives. The book closes out with Dodd and his family's return to the US and events that took place thereafter.

Another wonderful work by Erik Larson.

History as a novelist might present it.
By Jill Meyer
Erik Larson is not a novelist but his books on historical subjects are as beautifully written as if a novelist had written them. He has written about Chicago and the 1893 World's Fair, a terrible hurricane in Galveston, Texas, and a doctor/murderer in London. In all his books, he juxtaposes two events or characters and flits between the two. In this book, "In the Garden of Beasts", he presents the Dodd family of four in 1933 and the growing menace of Hitler and the Nazi party. It's brilliant writing at its best.

William Dodd was a professor at the University of Chicago and a product of a southern upbringing. He was mild-mannered and subtle, but fairly ambitious, career-wise. As a self-described "Jeffersonian Democrat", Dodd had come to the attention of newly-inaugurated Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 when Roosevelt and his State Department were looking for a new US ambassador to Germany. Adolf Hitler had come to power in Germany at about the same time as Roosevelt in the United States. Both faced Depression-wracked countries and both set about helping to heal the economic woes. Hitler's plans were much more ambitious at that point; getting out of the Versailles Treaty restrictions and cleansing Germany of her Jewish population were also on the agenda. Roosevelt's appointment of William Dodd as the United States Ambassador to Germany brought many questions from old diplomatic "hands" at the State Department as well as among Roosevelt's aides. Was Dodd "tough" enough to deal with Hitler? And, what WAS "tough enough" in dealing with Hitler and the growing German menace? And, what WAS the "growing German menace"? Lots of questions in 1933 wouldn't be answered until later; later, after "The Night of Long Knives", "Krystalnach", and the whole bloody butchery of WW2.

Dodd brought with him to Berlin in 1933 his wife, and two grown children, Martha and Bill, Jr. It was Martha - then aged 22 and full of life and with a secret, soon-to-be-divorced husband back home - who flirted with both the night-life and the political intrigue of Berlin. She landed in exalted circles - both artistic and political - and lead a rather exhausting love life with Germans, Americans, and Russians.

Life in Berlin in 1933 was easy-going, but still "edgy" as Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party fought for a political future. President Hindenburg was still alive and Hitler was his Chancellor. He was still not in command and would not be so until Hindenburg's death nearly a year later. Hitler was also fighting within his own ranks. His old comrade, Ernst Rohm, led the SA and it was a threat to Hitler. "The Night of Long Knives", in 1934, was the coup staged by Hitler as he got rid of Rohm and a lot of other political enemies. William Dodd, sickened by the violence and the knowledge that Hitler was on the road to world-power, began to speak out firmly about the Nazi regime and the threat it posed.

"In the Garden" is a masterpiece of writing for those interested in the subject. His book, "Devil in the White City", with its story of Chicago and a mass-murderer, might have appealed more to a wider audience, but this book is wonderful for the history buffs among us. I also appreciate the sources he lists at the end of the book.

Procurement 20/20: Supply Entrepreneurship in a Changing World, by Peter Spiller, Nicolas Reinecke, Drew Ungerman, Henrique Teixeira

How to achieve procurement excellence today and evolve to be ready for tomorrow

Procurement entrepreneurship pays. High-performing procurement teams can deliver huge value to their companies—regardless of industry. The best companies are advancing talent-management strategies into the heart of their procurement organizations with huge success. In addition to an estimated $84 billion in yearly cost savings, companies who give procurement leaders prominence deliver superior returns from their operations as well as lower their costs of goods sold.

This book, written by a group of purchasing and supply management practice experts, shares the hard-earned insights of more than ten years of dedicated procurement research conducted with leading academic institutions and practical experience with marquee clients in the field of procurement. It is also a natural successor to the many articles McKinsey & Company has published on the topic. This reliable resource skillfully explains and codifies the best practices that leading companies have pioneered in procurement as well as frames how procurement must evolve to grapple with new global, social, and economic issues affecting business over the next decade.

  • Details the four key dimensions of procurement excellence
  • Showcases the five megatrends that will change the way business is done in the next decade
  • Provides strategies that business leaders can adopt in the face of these megatrends, together with practical advice about next steps and case examples

The road ahead will require you to redefine your vision for procurement and implement the required changes. Procurement 20/20 will show you how.

From the Inside Flap

Since the publication of Peter Kraljic's noted article, "Purchasing Must Become Supply Management," the procurement function has come a long way. Companies are discovering procurement as a productivity driver, managers are building careers in procurement, academics are devoting research efforts and publications to the topic, and conferences are spreading learning from global developments. Today, with external spend at 85 percent of the total cost base of the average Fortune 500 company, CPOs and their organizations are more important than ever.

For years, the environment for procurement was predictable: prices continually rose, the world developed new sourcing markets in the Far East, cross-functional work within companies was initiated, economies of scale were achieved. That characterization is no longer accurate; it describes procurement of the past. In Procurement 20/20, the authors start at the discontinuities of the past ten years and take a look into the future. With research results from McKinsey's Global Institute, they identify the new environment in which procurement will have to operate. The world will be global in both sales and supply, companies will increasingly leverage functional specialists in their end-to-end value chain, big data and the global grid will reshape the way we create insights, volatility and scarcity will require agile operations, and governments and consumers will drive CPOs to buy differently through legislation and new spending behavior.

This new environment poses both a challenge and an opportunity for CEOs and their CPOs. They can defend the status quo or proactively seek strategies for this future. They can create global organizations, develop powerful supply networks, utilize the power of data-driven insights, master volatility, and participate in environmental, social, and regulatory changes. They can be ahead of the curve—by becoming supply entrepreneurs.

In this book, CEOs and CPOs will find compelling arguments for the changes to come, as well as sustainable strategies for conquering the challenges and turning them into opportunities. The journey starts with best practices today and extends to strategies for the future and ways to implement them. Procurement 20/20 is a corporate officer's handbook for the coming decade.

Balance of Visionary Thinking and Tough Love Advice
By Kelly McCarthy Barner
Procurement 20/20 is a team effort by four members of McKinsey’s Global Purchasing and Supply Management Practice: Peter Spiller, Nicolas Reinecke, Drew Ungerman, and Henrique Teixeira.

This book is an opportunity to get insight into the experience and research of the McKinsey team, most specifically, their seven year Global Purchasing Excellence (GPE) survey. This data provides the numbers to back up many of the things practitioners have known instinctively for years: the pressure for each employee to perform has gone up, as has external spend as a percent of total cost.
- “External spend as a fraction of total cost has increased by an average of 40 percent since 1970.” (p. 9)
- External spend has also “grown from roughly 60 percent of a company’s total expenditure in 1970 to 85% in 2010.” (p. 9)
- Companies on the S&P 500 realize approximately $900K in revenues per employee, a 22x increase since 1970. (p. 9)
- Leaders [as designated by McKinsey’s GPE survey] “invest 29 strategic full-time equivalent (FTE) employees per US $1 billion in spending.” (p. 19)

All of the leading procurement philosophies are reflected, including corporate virtualization, the need to outsource tactical sourcing in order to foster excellence, and the expectation that more training will be needed as attitude and work ethic are prioritized over experience in the hiring process. The authors also address the idea that procurement transformation – a phrase that has yet to be definitively captured and defined – is active preparation for the opportunities and challenges of the future.

In my opinion, the best thing about this book is McKinsey’s willingness to use their years of extensive research to back up some tough love declarations. These statements necessarily separate the leaders from the laggards. Procurement teams must have enough of the right talent, but they must also have the opportunity and drive to leverage it. Although there is no denying the importance of structure and systems, neither (nor the combination of both) is a substitute for superb talent. If, as Ralph Waldo Emerson told us in the 19th century, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds,” an overemphasis on process and technology is the refuge of a sub-par procurement team. Sometimes the truth just hurts.

The unfortunate reality of this well written and documented book is that the professionals most likely to read it are already singing in the “choir.” It will be an uphill battle to get your CEO or CFO to read it, no matter how much they (and their procurement team) would benefit as a result. The best use of the facts, benchmarks, and ideas contained within is to substantiate procurement’s requests for support, influence, and organizational change. Add that to the fact that the $25 price tag is a pittance compared to what a McKinsey consulting engagement costs, and the decision to buy this book becomes a no brainer.

From Publishers Weekly
From the authors of the excellent—and cheeky—Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World comes this winning collection of vegan cookie recipes that should appeal to vegans and nonvegans alike (if those nonvegans are willing to seek out a few specialty ingredients—the authors helpfully provide suggestions and resources—and make the unfortunate substitution of margarine for butter). Without a hint of preachiness, and with plenty of sass, the book delivers veganized versions of traditional cookies such as New York City's black and white cookies, Pepperidge Farm Milanos (called minonos) and lemon bars, about which the authors explain, “For too long we vegans have had our faces pressed against the glass of the dessert case and longing for the sweet tartness of those shimmering lemon bars. Well, you can stop scaring the staff of that bakery.” There are also sophisticated confections like toasted almond cookies with fleur de sel and macadamia lace cookies. While there are cookies that sound suspiciously healthy, such as fruity oaty bars and whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, decadent recipes like caramel pecan bars and starry fudge shortbread, filled with non-dairy chocolate ganache, show that you can be vegan and still indulge in delicious treats. Coooookie!!!
By Alin
It was worth waiting for, you guys! The authors of Veganomicon and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World work their magic on cookies this time around.

First off: it's adorable. The pictures, the colours, the font. Yeah, I like the font! It is such a charming cookbook, I really enjoy flipping through it.

Also, these seasoned pros give very handy tips for baking novices such as myself. Equipment, ingredients, substitutions, troubleshooting, they've covered all the bases before laying out the recipes.

And the recipes themselves! Wow. I've made a few that were previewed this spring, the Magical Coconut Bars and Chocolate Peanut Butter Pillows, so I knew this was the real deal. But.....this just has it all. All-time favorites, regional classics and innovative variations, everything you could possibly want in a cookie. Snickerdoodles, Cheesecake Brownies, Sweet Potato Blondies, I mean really. It's insane.

I picked up the book last night (my bookstore got it early!) and made two recipes from the "wholesome" section: Banana Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies and Applesauce Softies. Utilizing natural sweeteners and whole wheat flour, they were hearty, earthy and healthy. And delicious!

I leave you with this: Vegan Lemon Bars. There, that's all you need to know.

These cookies can invade my cookie jar any time!
By J B
I have spent a lot of time drooling over the pages and dreaming of the tasty cookies I could make, and I have made (or eaten made by others) roughly 1/4 of the recipes in the book. There are a scant few that I'll never make (i.e. anything that involves coffee flavour), and there have been just a handful I have made that I haven't been thrilled over.

Here is a sum-up of my favourite recipes I’ve tried so far.

Chocolate Chip Cookies - The dough was amazing, but cookie dough generally is. Like a number of other people, my first try didn't work out so well, but after some research on the PPK forums, I learned that reducing the oil to 1/2 cup makes the consistency perfect without having to add more flour. This does indeed work, and this recipe has become my go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe!

Chocolate Fudgy Oatmeal Cookies – Chocolatey, oaty, the zing of dried cherries? Cannot fail. The dough was amazingly good and a really good consistency – I found that letting it sit 10-15 minutes helped it stiffen up a little which helped to drop the cookies a little more easily, but even freshly mixed it was manageable.

Blackstrap Gingersnaps - I had been holding off on trying these because I didn’t have blackstrap molasses. I finally decided to just make them with regular, and these are INTENSE! In a really good way. It’s more of a grown-up gingersnap because the ginger flavour is so strong. But I like them and got a lot of compliments from friends who tried them.

Chocolatey Crinkle Cookies - I waited way, WAY too long to try these. It was largely due to “do I really want to use precious chocolate chips in a recipe like this?” But it was so, SO worth it. These are delectable. Beautiful to look at.

Cowboy/Cowgirl Cookies: THESE ARE SO GOOD.

Citrus Glitters: Tender, tangy, and sweet.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies - Tender goodness. This was my first time making cookies with an oil rather than a solid fat, so the process was new to me, but the results were Most Tasty. Then again, I just love oatmeal raisin cookies and it’s hard to go wrong with them, I’ve found.

Mexican Chocolate Snickerdoodles - I was squeamish about these, quite honestly. Chocolate and cinnamon is pushing my taste combination limits, but to throw cayenne in there too? Ack. Yet I really, really was curious and wanted to try them, so after I had a much braver friend (in another state) say she made them and loved them, I finally made a batch for our Friday night study group since the meal was to be baked burritos.

I was surprised. They were actually really good. The cinnamon is subtle, and the warmth of the cayenne doesn’t really hit you until afterwards, and it feels warm and glowy.

Magical Cocoanut Cookie Bars – I haven’t made these personally, but have eaten them several times made by a friend. They are super rich and absolutely delightful.

Deluxe Cocoa Brownies: These are DELICIOUS to the max.

Chocolate Chip Mint Leaf Icebox Cookies: These are minty, chocolate-chippy, and use real mint leaves. They are awesome!

Cookie Dough Scoops: I make these a LOT. They are always a huge hit. Extremely addictive.

3 out of 3 recipes tried failed
By l&jCarty
There is something wrong with 3 out of 3 recipes I tried (numbers 1, 3, and 4 in the book order). The first the chocolate chip cookies must have a misprint and mean 2 1/2 cups flour not 1 1/2 total because when they told you to add one cup flour before the rest they must not have calculated this into the total. They are an oily mess but if you add one cup more flour than the recipe calls for then they turn out great.

Next I tried the Chocolate Fudgy Oatmeal Cookies. There was so much oil and it was a sloppy soup of a mess. I decided to add an entire extra cup of flour and they turned out really good. You're not going to be able to follow the flatten slightly with moistened hands or the back of a moistened measuring cup directions.. They just don't work that way.

Finally I tried Blackstrap Gingersnaps. It says roll into balls. There is no rolling with this mess. It is a soup that just spreads thin on the sheet. I thought what the hell let's bake them anyway and they don't get crunchy like the recipe says they will be. They also seem overly oily. I don't know what is wrong with this recipe.

Three out of three recipes I tried called for canola oil and something is wrong with all three. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I followed the directions exactly as written and failed at each until I made a change with two of them. I don't know if I'll try more from this book or give up.

From Library Journal
When the teenage narrator's brother kills an abusive security guard and goes on the lam with a glamorous young woman, they and their families become pop-culture heroes, living out roles that are as twisted as the media's account of the original crime. Loriga describes the horror, that "oozes into your family and becomes part of it, and that's what changes everything...I'm not saying I approve, don't get me wrong, I'm just saying there's two sides to every gun. There's a person at each end." The process of victimization, from an impulsive criminal act to mass public gorging on televised swill, is depicted skillfully and nondidactically. Loriga's economical, vaguely Hemingwayesque style is well suited to the story. A popular novelist in Spain, where this work was a best seller, Loriga is not well known here, but this book?and the film that is in the works?could be his big break internationally. la síntesis descarnada
By A Customer
Importante

One of the greatest writters of Spain "LTV"
By A Customer
Well, the literature have changed, an ray Loriga is part of that changes, LIterature TeleVision (LTV). Specially on this book a "road" story the humor make us feel angry and at the same time, happy; sometimes like we have dead feelings and with some of the Loriga's words you put them alive.
